Small Business Advertising Mistakes | Advertising Jobs and Careers ...

When it comes to advertising, small businesses can choose from an assortment of different options. There are traditional options for advertising, which includes radio advertising, television advertising, and print advertising in local newspapers. However, there are more advanced advertising options, which includes mobile marketing and online advertisements, all of which can be done, even for those who are on a stricter budget. However, in order for a small business owner to make the most of their advertising campaign, they need to be sure to avoid the common problems that many business owners face when advertising.

The first problem that many business owners face is that they set budgets that are simply unrealistic. The amount of money put out for advertisement should never be ridiculously high if the money is not there. It should also not be too low because too little advertising can end up being a waste of money. Small business owners need to do the math to make sure that the budget they set for their business will not result in any losses from their advertising. And, setting too small of a budget, with just one advertisement in a local paper, will simply not generate the responses that the small business owners want and need to survive. A small campaign that lasts for at least 3 months will need to be set up.

Another problem is that many small business owners are not targeting the right audience. For the utmost success with an advertising campaign, it is important to target the right people, the people who are generally most likely to buy certain products from the business. Small business owners need to keep track of who regularly comes into their store and who buys what. Knowing specific characteristics of the majority of buyers will help a small business to target specific audiences when advertising. Surveys can be set up to help with the process of finding out which buyers would be more than likely to shop at the small business.

Small business owners have to be willing to track their progress and figure out where the leads are coming from so that they know which advertisements are working and which advertisements are not. This is important but unfortunately, too many small business owners completely forget about tracking the data from advertisements. When a customer calls the business or comes in, the first question that should be asked is something along the lines of, ?How did you hear about our business??

Last but certainly not least, small business owners have to come up with an advertising strategy. The owner needs to decide which type of advertising works best for the business and run with the opportunity. Creative and quality advertisements are a must because they are what will engage the audience, getting them interested in the business and what the small business has to offer to them.

Love Is...Some Ground Up Hamburg

Ladies, I'm going to brag on my husband today. I believe he deserves it.

The other night, we had family taco night, which we hadn't done in a while. My hubby came home from a long day at work and went to directly making dinner while I watched our daughter play in the living room.

He cooked up the hamburger for our tacos into two separate dishes; one with the taco seasoning and one without just for me because he knows I don't like the spiciness of the seasoning. Then he diced up the tomatoes for me (even though he doesn't like them himself). And spread out all the fixings that my son and I like on the table.

We took turns eating so that one of us could feed our toddler and the other could enjoy dinner while it was still warm.

When dinner was finished, I mentioned I wanted to use the extra hamburger for my lunch the next day. He apologized that there wasn't a lot of meat left since he wasn't sure how much to leave out for me that wasn't seasoned. I was a little disappointed that there was just a little bit left, and I guess he could see that in my face (though I told him it was fine, I could make do with what we had).

He went out to the pharmacy to pick up some things that I needed and came home. Then I saw him in the kitchen again cooking and asked him what he was making, thinking that maybe he was making his lunch for work ahead of time.

He told me that he was cooking hamburger.

He had stopped by the grocery store on the way home and picked up some more so that I could have it for my lunch. And he took the time to cook it up for me and store it in the fridge to save me from having to do it.

When I put together my lunch the next day, I couldn't help but smile and be reminded of the sweet thing that he did for me. It was something simple, but that simple thing was done with so much love behind it.

I am one blessed woman to be married to a man who demonstrates love every day with simple actions.

Thank you honey for loving me like that.

Pasadena Schools ? St. Francis High School: Pennies for Patients ...

Published: Thursday, March 29, 2012 | 11:34 PM

St. Francis High School is excited to announce that it will be participating in the Pennies for Patients program in support of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Students will be collecting coins for the cause from April 16-27, 2012. By participating, the students at St. Francis are joining millions of students across the country who are raising funds to find cures for blood cancers like leukemia. St. Francis High School invites the local communities to participate as well. Don?t miss the chance to have fun and save lives! All money raised during the Pennies for Patients program will go to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Information on the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (http://www.lls.org/):

The mission of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin?s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. LLS is the world?s largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer. LLS funds lifesaving blood cancer research around the world and provides free information and support services.

Hope Rises from Loss

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) was born out of a family?s grief following the death of their teenage son.

Robert Roesler de Villiers (left), son of a well-to-do New York family, was only 16 when he quickly succumbed to leukemia in 1944. Five years later, frustrated by the lack of effective treatments for what was then considered a hopeless disease, parents Rudolph and Antoinette de Villiers started a fundraising and education organization in their son?s name.

Headquartered in a small Wall Street office, the Robert Roesler de Villiers Foundation had only a few volunteers and a tiny budget. The task was daunting. Most leukemia patients, especially children, died within three months. Even by the mid-1950s, when the first-generation chemotherapy drugs began appearing, the disease remained a stubborn challenge. The Foundation reported in its 1955 annual report: ?As of this date, Leukemia is 100% fatal. This is almost a unique situation among the many diseases to which man is susceptible.?

Driven by the de Villiers? nearly boundless belief that leukemia and other blood cancers were indeed curable, the Foundation grew steadily, opening its first chapters in the New York City area. The organization, after changing its name to The Leukemia Society, was renamed The Leukemia Society of America in the 1960s to communicate a broad, national reach.

Note to Mega Millions lottery winner: Beware! (+video)

Sure, the jackpot for the Mega Millions lottery is an all-time high of $640 million ? and ticket sales on Friday are through the roof. But winning brings its own complications. Read on.

By Ron Scherer,?Staff writer, Kara Bloomgarden-Smoke,?Contributor / March 30, 2012

Here's a cautionary tale for anyone dreaming of winning the record $640 million Mega Millions jackpot Friday night: It?s a dangerous world out there for lottery winners.

Skip to next paragraph The jackpot in the Mega-Millions lottery drawing Friday is set to an all-time record triggering lottery mania across the United States.

The winner, warns Chicago lawyer Andrew Stoltmann, will be besieged by con artists, investment scams, family members whom they haven?t seen in decades, and scores of charities ? some legitimate, some imaginary.?

?It is tragic,? says Mr. Stoltmann, who represents a man whose $5.5 million lottery winnings were wiped out due to what the lawyer says was bad investment advice.

Others say what's tragic is that more people don?t pay heed to the miniscule chance of winning the Mega Millions. According to lottery officials, the odds of possessing the winning ticket are 1 in 176 million ? meaning an individual would be more likely to get hit by lightning or be eaten by a shark. One statistician notes that the Chicago Cubs have a better chance of winning the World Series this year.

?People know there are long odds,? says Scott Hoover, a professor of business administration at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. ?But people are irrational in buying. They see it as a form of entertainment because if you look at it as an investment, it?s a horrible thing to do.?

Some buyers are well aware that winning is a very remote possibility. At New York?s Port Authority bus terminal, Henry Wallace is among the lottery players lined up Friday at a Hudson News kiosk.?

?I figure it?s about the same as the chances of Nicole Kidman walking into the Port Authority and handing me an Oscar,? says Mr. Wallace, who works for the Bergen County (New Jersey) government. ?But why not? It?s just a dollar and a dream.?

But this week, for every American who sees buying a ticket as a waste of good money, there's another who is eager to be parted from his or her earnings. The pace at which Mega Millions tickets have been selling is phenomenal. Since Tuesday, Mr. Hoover estimates, people have spent about $600 million on tickets ? and perhaps as much as $1.2 billion since the last winner on Jan. 24. In Massachusetts, tickets were selling at the rate of 14,000 per minute on Friday, says Beth Bresnahan, a spokeswoman for the Massachusetts Lottery.

?This is unprecedented,? says Ms. Bresnahan. ?The scale of this thing is driving the increase. People are coming out of the woodwork.?

First the smart phone, now the smart home: Technology anticipates, meets our needs for health, efficiency

ScienceDaily (Mar. 29, 2012) ? We have all heard of the smartphone and, any day now, most of us will have one. Not far behind: the smart home.

Writing in the latest issue of the journal Science, Washington State University's Diane Cook says it won't be long before our homes act as "intelligent agents" that use sensors and software to anticipate our needs and tend to tasks that improve our health, energy efficiency, even social media.

Many homes are already halfway there, with computer chips helping microwave popcorn, record TV shows and turn on coffee makers and thermostats.

"If you have a programmable thermostat, you have the beginnings of a smart home," says Cook, a WSU professor of electrical engineering and computer science. "What we're trying to do is get the home to take over the job of programming it.

"We want your home as a whole to think about what you need and use the components in it to do the right thing," she says.

Cook has been applying artificial intelligence in test homes since coming to WSU in 2006. Sites around the Northwest, including 18 apartments in Seattle, already show that the technology can help monitor aging-in-place elderly residents and alert caregivers if they are not completing ordinary activities like rising, eating, bathing and taking medications.

Similarly, homes can be designed to automatically regulate energy use, the source of nearly half a consumer's energy diet. Smart home technologies can run washers at off-peak times, turn off unneeded appliances and put out lights in empty rooms without residents having to make conscious choices. Many communities, including Pullman, are already testing such concepts through the use of smart meters.

While the smartphone lets people take their social media with them, the home could in effect act like a car's Bluetooth, facilitating hands-free conversation from any room. For that matter, says Cook, cameras would let residents "Skype from anywhere."

But while the technology is available, technologies like smart meters and in-home cameras raise privacy concerns for many Americans. The technologies, like so many others, face a classic challenge of being accepted and adopted, says Cook.

She has seen that in particular with the elderly participants in her studies.

"Ultimately," she says, "when people get a better understanding of what these technologies do and see a usefulness that counterbalances their skittishness, adoption will start. I'm guessing some technologies will gain momentum once they're starting to be used."

Cook's work is funded by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and Washington State's Life Sciences Discovery Fund.

Artificial thymus tissue enables maturation of immune cells

Thursday, March 29, 2012

The thymus plays a key role in the body's immune response. It is here where the T lymphocytes or T cells, a major type of immune defence cells, mature. Different types of T cells, designated to perform specific tasks, arise from progenitor cells that migrate to the thymus from the bone marrow. Researchers at the Max Planck Institute of Immunology and Epigenetics in Freiburg have generated artificial thymus tissue in a mouse embryo to enable the maturation of immune cells. In this process, they discovered which signalling molecules control the maturation of T cells. Their results represent the first step towards the production of artificial thymus glands that could be used to replace or augment the damaged organ.

As part of the immune response, the T cells are responsible for tracking down and destroying intruders and degenerated cells in the body. Their progenitors are formed in the bone marrow. Attracted by chemical signals, they migrate from there to the thymus. This small organ, which is located above the heart, is divided into niches that provide the cells with environmental conditions necessary for their different development phases. The cells mature there into different types of T cells, which are eventually released into the body.

Signalling substances that are active in the various niches of the thymus play a crucial role in the maturation of the progenitor cells. A combination of four proteins ? the two chemokines Ccl25 and Cxcl12, and the cytokine Scf and the Notch ligand DLL4 ? determines whether progenitor cells are attracted to a particular niche in the thymus and how they develop there. It was not previously known which combination of factors is responsible for the development of a particular cell type.

Researchers from the Max Planck Institute in Freiburg have now succeeded in explaining the control mechanism. "The development of the progenitor cells depends on surprisingly few factors and follows simple rules," says Thomas Boehm. "For example, just two factors, namely Cxcl12 and DLL4, are sufficient for the T cell progenitors to complete half of their development. From that point, it takes just a few steps until two types of mature T cells with the CD4 and CD8 surface molecules are formed. Previously, it was assumed that the control process was far more complicated," explains the scientist.

In order to test how the different combinations of the four genetic factors affect the maturation and differentiation of the immune cells, the researchers created an artificial thymus environment in the mouse embryo. To do this, they switched off the transcription factor Foxn1. Fox1 ensures that all of the genes in the DNA that code for the four different proteins are read. Foxn1 is thus a kind of "general switch" with which all of the relevant genes can be turned off all at once. Having generated non-functional thymus tissue in this way, the researchers then activated the genes again individually and in combination and observed the associated effects on the development of the progenitor cells.

Interestingly, the scientists were also able to attract the progenitors of B lymphocytes and of mast cells to the artificial thymus environment and allow them to mature there. These two types of immune cells normally only develop in the bone marrow. By switching off the Notch ligand DLL4, the researchers were also able to control the maturation of these cells in the artificial thymus. This would suggest that the genetic factors at work in the bone marrow are similar to those in the thymus.

"Our results are not only of relevance to the understanding of fundamental immunological processes," says Thomas Boehm. "They also constitute early milestones in the development of artificial thymuses. This means that one day we may be able to help patients whose thymus has been damaged, for example as a result of cancer treatment," hopes the scientist.

Chavez criticizes US take on crime in Venezuela

(AP) ? Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is taking issue with the U.S. State Department for posting a statement advising travelers to beware of rampant violent crime in his country.

Chavez said Tuesday in Cuba during an appearance on Venezuelan state television that the South American country's security situation ought to be compared to that of the United States.

"Where would there be greater lack of public security on the streets? In Venezuela or in the United States?," Chavez said. "Let's look at the figures."

The website of the U.S. Embassy in Caracas includes a link to the statement on State Department travel site describing safety threats in Venezuela. The statement notes that violent crime in the country is widespread and says the murder rate has been cited as being among the top five in the world.

The statement refers to increasing numbers of killings and kidnappings in the country, and cites data from the Venezuelan Violence Observatory, a non-governmental group tracks crime. The organization's tally of homicide figures from police totaled more than 19,000 during 2011, and it described the year as the most violent in Venezuela's history.

Chavez's government has not released detailed annual murder statistics in recent years. Justice Minister Tareck El Aissami said in early 2011, however, that the murder rate was 48 homicides per 100,000 residents in 2010. That was one of the highest murder rates in Latin America.

In the United States, the FBI reported in September that for 2010 the rate for murder and non-negligent manslaughter fell to 4.8 per 100,000 people, less than half what it was two decades ago.

Chavez defended his socialist government's anti-crime efforts and said violent crime is a problem "inherited from the capitalist time" before he took office in 1999.

The Venezuelan leader is in Cuba undergoing radiation treatment following an operation last month that removed what he said was a second cancerous tumor. The first was removed last June.

Chavez is running for re-election in October, and he warned that his political opponents could try to foment violence in Venezuela.

"We're the guarantee of peace," he said.

Discover Paris TN - ShopSmart Helps You Save on Everyday ...

?

ShopSmart MagazineYonkers, NY ? It?s easy to overspend on personal-care products ? costly necessities add up quickly, and before you know it, you are walking out of the drugstore with a tiny bag and a giant bill.

The April 2012 issue of ShopSmart magazine, from the publisher of Consumer Reports, features a how-to-save guide on everyday, personal-care items including shampoo, razors and highlights the most rewarding store-loyalty programs.?Knowing what stores have the best values on personal-care products can help you save big,? said Lisa Lee Freeman, editor-in-chief of ShopSmart. ?So we sent our secret shoppers out to find out who has the best deals on items like shampoo, soap and razors.?

Money-saving lessons learned

  • Walmart can save you big bucks. It had the lowest prices on the most items on our shopping list ? similar to what we?ve found in previous price scans. Target was often a close second but rarely had the absolute lowest prices.
  • Drugstores can cost you. CVS and Walgreens had the highest prices on the most products. They might be convenient, and their loyalty cards can net you some good discounts, but you could pay as much as 112 percent more than you would at Walmart.
  • Websites are the place to go for higher-end brands. If you?re looking for Aveeno instead of Vaseline, or a natural brand like Burt?s Bees, you might find the best deals online. But you?ll pay extra for shipping if you don?t spend at least $25.00 at Amazon and Drugstore.com, or at least $50.00 at HarmonDiscount.com.
  • Supermarkets aren?t so bad. We were surprised to see that their prices were pretty competitive. So if you?re in a pinch, don?t worry that you?re paying a premium for the convenience of grabbing a bottle of shampoo along with your groceries.

More ways to save

  • Stock up when stuff is on sale. Instead of waiting until you run out of something or start to run low, load up on products when they?re marked down. Ad circulars and websites like SundaySaver.com can help you plan ahead.
  • Max out coupons. Read the retailer coupon policies. Most supermarkets allow stacking ? using store and manufacturer coupons together. Some stores, such as Stop&Shop and Piggly Wiggly, also double coupons. If you hit a sale, you have a coupon, and the store will double it, you may end up paying a lower price at a supermarket than somewhere else.
  • Try store brands. Many store-brand products are just like their name-brand versions, and you might even like them better. Walmart?s Equate brand, for example, got high marks in our most recent body-lotion test.

Store cards that pay

  • CVS Extracare Rewards Program (Free)Earn 2 percent back on all purchases, and ExtraBucks Rewards for select items. Use ExtraCare Coupon Center kiosks in stores for extra savings and get special offers via e-mail and on your receipt at checkout. What?s new: Rewards can be automatically sent to your card so that you don?t have to print and remember your coupons.
  • Rite Aid Wellness+ (Free)Earn 1 point for every nonprescription dollar spent; the more points you get in a year, the more you save. Access members-only sales, collect register rewards, and get up to 20 percent off all nonprescription purchases. Collect bonus rewards when you buy select items; they?re printed on your receipt at checkout. What?s new: The Load2Card program lets you save, manage, and redeem store and manufacturer online coupons from your computer. When you hit 500 points, you can earn health rewards to use for gym memberships, wellness screenings, and other things.
  • Target REDcard Rewards(No fee; variable APR)Get 5 percent off all online and in-store purchases. Plus, 1 percent of what you spend goes to a school of your choice if it?s eligible. What?s new: Use a REDcard on Target.com and get free shipping.

FONTANA, Calif. (AP) ? When dark clouds ominously obscured majestic Mount Baldy north of Auto Club Speedway early in Sunday's race, NASCAR's drivers all realized they were probably in for a short day on a long track.

Nobody did a better job racing until the raindrops fell than Tony Stewart.

Stewart got his second NASCAR victory of the season when rain shortened the race at Auto Club Speedway by 71 laps, extending the defending Sprint Cup champion's unusually strong start.

Kyle Busch finished second, and Dale Earnhardt Jr. added to his good start to the season in third.

"You hate to have it end with rain like that," Stewart said. "But we've lost some that way, and we didn't back into the lead."

Stewart has won seven of the last 15 races, including Las Vegas last month, in a remarkable stretch of dominance for a driver who rarely gets rolling until summer.

Although Stewart sees nothing special about his approach to the new season, he's clearly focused. Stewart and new crew chief Steve Addington didn't mention the rain to each other until moments before it hit one end of the 2-mile oval, but they had already done the work necessary to win.

"It's been nice to get off to a good start this year the way we have," said Stewart, who has been even more impressive this year despite firing crew chief Darian Grubb last December. "The history shows the last 13 years, we haven't had the strongest start the first third of the year, but I'm really excited about the start we've got going. Daytona was probably our weakest race, and I know I made decisions trying to make things happen and it didn't work out. I'm really proud of what Steve and all our guys have done."

Stewart's Chevrolet passed Busch 44 laps before the race was stopped when the looming rain clouds finally burst and halted a race run entirely on green flags to that point. Although a few drivers weren't happy when the race was called off after a delay of just over 30 minutes amid steadily worsening rain, Stewart collected his 46th career win and his second at Fontana.

"Playing to the weather, everybody is trying to get everything they can get toward the midway point of that race," Stewart said.

Defending race winner Kevin Harvick was fourth, and Carl Edwards was fifth. Greg Biffle, Edwards' Roush Fenway Racing teammate, finished sixth and kept a seven-point lead on Harvick atop the points standings.

"We had a great race car there from the start of the race," said Busch, who started second alongside teammate Denny Hamlin and took the lead on the second lap. "We led a lot of laps. I just wish we led 30 more."

The drivers saw only blue skies at their meeting two hours before the race began, but the weather steadily worsened. The resulting drop in temperature threw off many teams' calculations on air pressure and other decisions, forcing adjustments on their first pit stops.

Realizing they might not be able to get much past the halfway point necessary to make a race official, the drivers mounted a fast, clean race on the extra-wide track, nearly setting the track record for consecutive green-flag laps until the rain finally forced a caution on the 125th lap.

"We all knew it was just going to be a matter of time," Busch said. "So probably at Lap 60 or 70, we were thinking, 'OK, we're probably going to race to Lap 100.'"

The California track is known for its bumpy, wide asphalt that puts a premium on driver skill and strategy, but also is more susceptible to climate changes. Although most forecasts suggested the rain would stick around for a while, Hamlin went to Twitter to express his displeasure with NASCAR's decision to end the race with roughly five hours of daylight left.

"Never seen a race called at 2pm before," Hamlin tweeted. "1st time for everything. Strong weekend."

After hitting the wall late in last week's race at Bristol, Stewart was back in top form. He earned his earliest win in a NASCAR season two weeks ago at Las Vegas with an aggressive move out of a restart, but the real racing at Fontana hadn't even started before rain hit.

"We didn't have an opportunity to do anything other than what we had planned from the start," said Earnhardt, who has finished in the top 15 in all five races this season. "I like how our season is going so far. If we keep going like this, maybe we can get some opportunities ... and seal the deal."

The rain erased a potential disappointment for five-time Fontana champion Jimmie Johnson, who was 10th when the caution came out. He elected to pit, getting four tires and fuel ? but moments later, his car started spitting smoke.

With no idea what was wrong with the car, crew chief Chad Knaus told Johnson to keep dripping oil on the course so he could keep his position if the race was red-flagged. The strategy worked, and the five-time Sprint Cup champions extended their streak to 10 straight top-10 finishes on this track.

"Either a piece of debris hit an oil line and knocked the fitting off, or split the line," Johnson said. "I was just idling along, and my friends pulled up alongside and said, 'You're smoking.'"

Sloan-Kettering hires IBM's Watson for cancer diagnoses ...

New York?s Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center will soon employ IBM?s Watson intelligent computer to help physicians fight cancer more effectively.

When Big Blue debuted its lively computer on Jeopardy! last year, we knew it was only a matter of time before its abilities were used in the real world. And that starts with the hospital, apparently.

At Sloan-Kettering, Watson?s intelligence and?natural?language processing ability will be used as a reference tool to improve physicians? and nurses? access to cancer data.?IBM plans to cross-reference existing molecular and genomic data, and the hospital?s vast repository of cancer case histories, to create an outcome and evidence-based decision support system.

Jim Fitzgerald elaborates in a report for the Associated Press:

Watson will be fed textbooks, medical journals and ? with permission ? individual medical records. Then it will be tested with more and more complicated cancer scenarios and assessed with the help of an advisory panel.

The idea: so an oncologist anywhere can get his or her hands on diagnostic and treatment options for patients based on the latest research, then keep track of the evidence used to reach them, for later reference.

Earlier this month, we reported on the launch of IBM?s Clinical Genomics platform specifically; here, we?re seeing its first major client.

The possibilities are tantalizing; as a large family of diseases, cancer is ripe for the application of new technologies. (It?s the second-most common cause of death in the U.S.) Sloan-Kettering will deploy the platform to address lung, breast and prostate cancers beginning with a pilot later this year.

With intelligent databases ? and the computers to help sift through them ? the hope is that technology can help disperse the most advanced knowledge available, without the patient skipping from specialist to specialist.
