Toughened silicon sponges may make tenacious batteries

ScienceDaily (July 16, 2012) ? Researchers at Rice University and Lockheed Martin reported this month that they've found a way to make multiple high-performance anodes from a single silicon wafer. The process uses simple silicon to replace graphite as an element in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries, laying the groundwork for longer-lasting, more powerful batteries for such applications as commercial electronics and electric vehicles.

The work led by Sibani Lisa Biswal, an assistant professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at Rice, and lead author Madhuri Thakur, a Rice research scientist, details the process by which Swiss cheese-like silicon "sponges" that store more than four times their weight in lithium can be electrochemically lifted off of wafers.

The research was reported online this month in the American Chemical Society journal Chemistry of Materials.

Silicon -- one of the most common elements on Earth -- is a candidate to replace graphite as the anode in batteries. In a previous advance by Biswal and her team, porous silicon was found to soak up 10 times more lithium than graphite.

Because silicon expands as it absorbs lithium ions, the sponge-like configuration gives it room to grow internally without degrading the battery's performance, the researchers reported. The promise that silicon sponges, with pores a micron wide and 12 microns deep, held for batteries was revealed in 2010 at Rice's Buckyball Discovery Conference by Thakur, Biswal, their Rice colleague Michael Wong, a professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering and of chemistry, and Steven Sinsabaugh, a Lockheed Martin Fellow. But even then Thakur saw room for improvement as the solid silicon substrate served no purpose in absorbing lithium.

In the new work, they discovered the electrochemical etching process used to create the pores can also separate the sponge from the substrate, which is then reused to make more sponges. The team noted that at least four films can be drawn from a standard 250-micron-thick wafer. Removing the sponge from the silicon substrate also eliminates a limiting factor to the amount of lithium that can be stored.

The team also found a way to make the pores 50 microns deep. Once lifted from the wafer, the sponges, now open at the top and bottom, were enhanced for conductivity by soaking them in a conductive polymer binder, pyrolyzed polyacrylonitrile (PAN).

The product was a tough film that could be attached to a current collector (in this case, a thin layer of titanium on copper) and placed in a battery configuration. The result was a working lithium-ion battery with a discharge capacity of 1,260 milliamp-hours per gram, a capability that should lead to batteries that last longer between charges.

The researchers compared batteries using their film before and after the PAN-and-bake treatment. Before, the batteries started with a discharge capacity of 757 milliamp-hours per gram, dropped rapidly after the second charge-discharge cycle and failed completely by cycle 15. The treated film increased in discharge capacity over the first four cycles -- typical for porous silicon, the researchers said -- and the capacity remained consistent through 20 cycles.

The researchers are investigating techniques that promise to vastly increase the number of charge-discharge cycles, a critical feature for commercial applications in which rechargeable batteries are expected to last for years.

Co-authors of the paper are postdoctoral researcher Roderick Pernites, alumnus Naoki Nitta and Lockheed Martin researcher Mark Isaacson.

The work was supported by the Lockheed Martin Advanced Nanotechnology Center of Excellence at Rice.

Pacific Boxers :: General :: Why You Need Car Insurance

Auto Insurance Easton Pa There are more cars and drivers hitting the road every year. With countless vehicles on the road, accidents will happen. Automobile insurance can be the difference between a small setback and a major hassle. How can you decide what insurance you require and how to buy it? Car insurance protects you by covering the cost of damage caused to your car or another person?s car and injury to others, yourself, or your passengers, and certain other occurrences, such as theft. Every state and province mandates auto insurance by law. Choosing to drive without insurance could cause you to repair or replace a stolen or damaged vehicle or pay the cost of any damage for which you might be responsible. It pays for damages due to bodily injury and property damage to others for which you are responsible. Bodily injury damages include medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering. Property damage includes damaged property and loss of use of property. If you are sued, it also pays your defense and court costs. Higher recommended insurances are available that cover more than the lower, state-mandated insurance. Personal injury protection: This is required in some states and is optional in others. It pays you or your passengers for medical treatment resulting from a crash, regardless of who may have been at fault, and is often called no-fault coverage. It may also pay for lost earnings, replacement of services and funeral expenses. State law typically sets minimum amounts. Medical payments: This type of coverage is available in non-no-fault states and will pay no matter who is responsible for the accident. It pays for an insured person?s reasonable and necessary medical and funeral expenses for bodily injury from an accident. Collision: Pays for damage to your car caused by an accident. Comprehensive: Applies if your car is stolen or damaged by causes other than collision, including fire, wind, hail, flood or vandalism. Uninsured motorist: Pays for damages when an insured person is injured in a crash caused by another person who does not have liability insurance or by a person who cannot be identified (usually a hit-and-run driver). Under-insured motorist: Pays for damages when an insured person is injured in a crash caused by another person who does not have enough liability insurance to cover the full amount of the damages. Other coverages, like car rental and emergency road service, are also available.Your auto insurance payments vary by company and will depend on several factors, including: * What coverage you select * The make and model of the car you drive * Your driving record * Your age, gender and marital status and * Where you live Some have come to think of auto insurance as a necessary evil, but it can truly rescue your economic health Evaluate your needs, research your options and with the guidance of your insurance agent choose the option that best suits you. Junior dos Santos Laughs Off Alistair Overeem's Scared Claim

Jul 13, 2012 - Earlier this week, MMAFighting.com posted an interview with Alistair Overeem in which Overeem stated that he believed UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos was scared of him.

Not surprisingly, when dos Santos was asked about those comments on Thursday's UFC Tonight on FUEL TV, he laughed them off quickly.

"The school of Chael Sonnen has more students," dos Santos said with a big smile. "This guy is going to start to talk a lot of (expletive) because he saw the UFC give Chael Sonnen a chance to fight Anderson again, but man, I'm not afraid of him. I'm not afraid of anybody here."

Overeem was supposed to fight dos Santos at UFC 146 until the Nevada State Athletic Commission refused to license him after his testosterone/epitestosterone ratio was above the approved limit. He is eligible to apply for another license on Dec. 27. Until then, dos Santos will fight Cain Velasquez later this year.

"I hit very hard," Overeem said. "I've knocked out a lot of people. I've submitted a lot of people. I am, in any way you look at it, a legitimate threat to his title. And I'm on the run for it, and I'm going to get it. He knows that.

"Other than that, Cain is also doing very well right now but Cain doesn't hit as hard as I do. Cain is smaller than I. Cain has less experience. So I would say I'm the biggest legitimate threat to his title. That's why he's afraid."

UFC president Dana White said last month that he was hoping to book dos Santos vs. Velasquez 2 at UFC 152 in September, but dos Santos said in the same interview that he wasn't healthy enough to fight then. He is planning on fighting again around November.

It doesn't appear likely that Overeem will get an immediate title shot upon returning, but stranger things have happened before.

"If [Overeem] thinks he's better than me," dos Santos said, "come to fight with me. Soon he'll feel the power of my hand and he's going to change his mind."

Best choice safe and also reliable data recovery software

When using computer, people may perform some poor operations such as unintended deletion and unintended formatting. If company client data is removed or partition keeping precious photos or video is accidentally arranged, users will deal with trouble and cutbacks in work as well as life. Once loss of data occurs, users are generally eager to make up the mistake. As technology builds up, except serious actual device damage, recover file for other scenarios is not difficult. There are two main data recovery methods one is to gain file recovery service from skilled data recovering organization, another is to perform recovery with data recovery software program. Both of these methods get advantages and disadvantages.
Generally, if we operate data located on computer, incidents may happen, like wrongly recognized deletion, mistaken style, logical partition damage, partition decline, and virus attack. Under these conditions, data are easy to get rid of, bringing negative effects to work, life and even feelings.

Safe and reliable data recovery software

With the development of computer technology and the increase regarding demands for recover file, data recovery industry is consequently developed, and many software development companies have developed their own data recovery equipment. So, users will find desired data recovery application on the internet. However, facing so many data recovery methods whose quality differs from each other, what don?t let care about? Firstly, the information recovery tool we select should have very good reliability. The quality of recover file tool directly establishes whether lost info can be recovered properly or not. If we utilize unreliable data recovery device, accidents may come out. For example, scanning suspends suddenly or the tool works unstably. This kind of data recovery resources may cause lost info to be damaged for your second time. Subsequently, we should care about user friendliness. If operating interface is so complex roughly simple, the difficulty in using data recovery tool will likely be increased to a certain extent. Your data recovery tool which includes concise interface and easy operations can increase data recovery efficiency mainly. At last, function along with utility are also very important.
Data recovery is the process involving retrieving lost, wiped or inaccessible info from failed digital storage media like computer hard disk drives, removable media, optical products and tape ink cartridges.
Your data can become unavailable due to a software difficulty, computer virus, mechanical or even electrical malfunction or even a deliberate human act.
Have you ever met if you turned on your computer determined that a virus acquired wiped much of your hard drive clean? Perhaps you?ve got even deleted an e-mail out of your trash trash can, but you found that a person desperately needed the information with regard to work? All of these are extremely real problems as well as the data recovery software is a similarly real solution like them.

Eva Rausing Dead: U.K. Billionaire Hans Kristian Rausing Investigated In Wife's Death

LONDON -- Investigators were conducting further tests Wednesday in a bid to shed light on the death of Eva Rausing, one of Britain's richest women, whose body was found in her west London home.

Her husband, Hans Kristian Rausing, has been arrested in connection to suspected drug crimes and police want to question him about the circumstances of his wife's death. He is currently receiving medical treatment in a London hospital. Police have not indicated that Eva Rausing's death was a result of foul play or that a crime was committed.

U.S.-born Eva Rausing, 48, and her husband were wealthy philanthropists who have both waged a long battle against drug addiction. They were arrested on drug charges in 2008 after Eva Rausing was caught trying to smuggle crack cocaine and heroin into the U.S. Embassy in London in her handbag.

Hans Kristian Rausing, 49, is an heir to the Tetra Pak fortune his father built as a globally successful manufacturer of laminated cardboard drink containers.

Police found Eva Rausing dead at her multimillion-pound (dollar) London home on Monday. Initial post-mortem examinations Tuesday failed to establish a formal cause of her death.

The Metropolitan Police said officers arrested a 49-year-old man Monday in connection with the case. Police did not release the man's name but offered details of the arrest in response to a question about Hans Kristian Rausing.

They said they arrested the man on suspicion of drug possession, and that a subsequent search of an address in London's upmarket Belgravia neighborhood related to that arrest led to the discovery of Eva Rausing's body later that day.

Police said he remained under arrest Wednesday but was receiving medical attention at a location away from a police station. They would not say if the man was under guard.

Eva Rausing's parents, Tom and Nancy Kemeny, and the rest of her family paid tribute to a "devoted wife" and mother of four "much loved and wonderful children," saying they were devastated over her death. Their statement also alluded to her struggles.

"During her short lifetime she made a huge philanthropic impact, supporting a large number of charitable causes, not only financially, but using her own personal experiences," the family said in a statement. "She bravely fought her health issues for many years."

A statement from her in-laws, Hans and Marit Rausing, said they were "deeply shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic death."

Eva Rausing supported a number of charities that helped to fight addictions. One of them ? Action on Addiction ? was among the first to express sadness over her death and praise her "wonderfully generous" support over the years.

She also was listed as a long-time supporter of The Prince's Foundation, part of a group of nonprofit charities that have Prince Charles as their patron. His office said the prince was told of Rausing's death but did not offer further comment.

In a diplomatic scandal in 2008, Eva Rausing was arrested outside the U.S. Embassy in for reportedly trying to bring crack cocaine and heroin into building in her handbag. Police later found small amounts of cocaine, crack and heroin in a search of the couple's house. They were charged with drug possession but prosecutors later agreed to drop the charges in exchange for formal police warnings.

At the time, the Rausing family issued a statement saying relatives were "deeply saddened" by the couple's drug problems and hoped they could overcome their addictions.

Hans Rausing's Swedish father helped transform Tetra Pak into a hugely successful manufacturer. The fortune of the senior Rausing and his family is estimated at 4.3 billion pounds ($6.7 billion) by the Sunday Times Rich List.

US trade deficit fell to $48.7 billion in May

(AP) ? The U.S. trade deficit narrowed in May from April, helped by cheaper oil that lowered imports and an increase in American exports to Europe and China.

But economists cautioned that the global economy has weakened since then. And they noted that the decline in the deficit wasn't enough to alter their growth forecasts for the April-June quarter.

The Commerce Department said Wednesday that the trade deficit fell 3.8 percent to $48.7 billion in May, down from $50.6 billion in April.

Exports rose 0.2 percent to $183.1 billion. The increase reflected stronger sales of telecommunications equipment and heavy machinery. Exports to the 27-nation European Union rose 2.6 percent in May from April.

Imports dropped 0.7 percent to $231.8 billion. The amount the U.S. spent on imported oil fell to the lowest level in 15 months.

A narrower trade gap acts as less of a drag on growth. It means the U.S. is spending less on foreign-made products, while taking in more from sales of American-made goods.

"It is always nice to see the trade deficit narrow but I am not sure this will continue," said Joel Naroff, chief economist for Naroff Economic Advisors. "The sharp decline in oil prices has faded and the economies in Europe and Asia have weakened further."

A separate Commerce report showed U.S. wholesale companies added modestly to their stockpiles in May. But sales at the wholesale level dropped by the largest amount in three years. That could prompt companies to restock more slowly in the coming months, which could weigh on growth later this year.

U.S. manufacturing has weakened this year, hurt by Europe's financial crisis and slower growth in China. At the same time, sluggish U.S. job growth and meager pay increases have made American consumers more cautious about spending. Consumer spending drives roughly 70 percent of economic activity.

Paul Ashworth, chief U.S. economist at Capital Economics, doesn't see growth picking up from the January-March's tepid 1.9 percent annual pace. He's predicting annual growth of between 1.5 percent and 2 percent in the April-June quarter.

Lower oil prices were the main reason the trade deficit narrowed in May, he said. Further price declines should narrow deficits further in June and July.

U.S. export growth has slowed and will slow further "given the sharp slowdown in economic growth in Europe and Asia," Ashworth said. He predicted that trade would be a drag on growth in the second half of this year "and probably through 2013 as well."

The U.S. deficit with the EU widened 21 percent in May to $10.5 billion because imports from Europe increased 7.8 percent.

America's trade deficit with China increased to $26 billion in May. U.S. exports to China rose 5.2 percent, but imports rose by a faster 5.8 percent. The deficit with China is the largest with any country and is on pace to break last year's all-time high.

Other reports suggest exports have slowed since May.

A survey by the Institute for Supply Management, a trade group of purchasing managers, said U.S. manufacturing shrank in June for the first time in nearly three years. The survey noted that exports declined and new orders plunged.

Economic growth of 1.9 percent is not enough to significantly lower the unemployment rate, which stayed at 8.2 percent in June.

Development of 'Slater insulator' that rapidly changes from conductor to insulator at room temperature

ScienceDaily (July 11, 2012) ? Dr. Kazunari Yamaura, a Principal Researcher of the NIMS Strongly Correlated Materials Group, Superconducting Properties Unit, in joint work with a research group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (United States), has succeeded in developing a Slater insulator which functions at room temperature.

Dr. Kazunari Yamaura, a Principal Researcher of the Strongly Correlated Materials Group, Superconducting Properties Unit, National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS; President: Sukekatsu Ushioda), in joint work with a research group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the United States, succeeded in development of a Slater insulator which functions at room temperature.

Slater insulators have been studied for more than 50 years as insulators with special properties. Although Slater insulators display the properties of metals at a sufficiently high temperature, they become insulators when cooled to a certain temperature (transition temperature) peculiar to the substance concerned. Because this transition temperature was conventionally far lower than room temperature, study had been limited to scientific research, and virtually no research had been done aiming at development to applications.

This research clarified the fact that a new material (Perovskite type osmium oxide), which was synthesized for the first time by NIMS in 2009, is the Slater insulator with the highest transition temperature to date. This result was verified through joint experimental research with a research group at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in the United States using the neutron diffraction method.

Because this new material displays the characteristics of a Slater insulator at room temperature without requiring cooling, it is not only scientifically interesting, but also has the potential for development to application as a new material. If further progress can be achieved in research with this new material as a starting point, there is a possibility that new materials and devices with unprecedented functions can be developed. Concretely, application to solid state devices for detecting signals in the terahertz region, new thermoelectric conversion materials, etc. is considered possible. In the future, research will be carried out aiming at development of new materials with possible practical applications.

Mark Goulston, M.D.: 'Resistance n'existe pas'

Resistance doesn't exist, only non-rational, nonfunctional self-preservation.

Like me, you probably have noticed that you can't read the front page of a newspaper without seeing a story where two opponents -- be it global, national, political or local -- appear to be fighting each other, digging their heels in, refusing to compromise and in many cases even communicate.

Wouldn't you agree that it is time for a paradigm shift?

The current paradigm appears to quickly view the person(s) on the other side of the table as: a) resisting you, b) refusing to cooperate, c) refusing to budge on their point of view, d) seeking to push and pressure you out of your point of view (because they view you as doing the same to them) and plain and simple d) just not listening or considering the merits of your point of view. Can you see if any of these are true, that cooperation, collaboration and even communication is going to be a challenge?

You've heard the saying: "When you're a hammer, the world looks like a nail." Does that also mean that: "When you feel like a nail, there is always lurking some hammer that is trying to hammer you?"

As long as you see the world as a nail to your hammer or a hammer to your nail, progress will be stymied. However, if you realize that, even if the world is acting like a hammer toward you, it is actually feeling like that nail underneath, and it is a fear of what you are trying to do to it that causes it to act the way it does. When that occurs and you have less of a need to defend yourself, the possibility for rational, functional communication and collaboration occurs.

When people that are driven by fear and self-preservation below act aggressively on the surface, they are demonstrating what is referred to as "fearful aggression." You see this phenomenon in show dogs or race horses or just your own house cat or dog. When they are afraid, they growl. Why such a "non-rational" and certainly nonfunctional reaction?

When you are going along with your guard down -- think Bambi prancing through the forest before hearing the gunshots of the hunters -- you are carefree and free to care about whatever your heart desires. Then, when suddenly you become aware of something that may not just injure, but destroy you (and in the world of men, that can be anything that threatens to humiliate them in front of others), you are in a moment transformed from carefree and invulnerable to fragile and then brittle. When you are in a state of fragility and you believe that the next injury will shatter you and you have become brittle, you will do anything to prevent that, even attacking a country before you have absolute proof of weapons of mass destruction. And decades ago you can view another country as the "evil empire" when in fact they are much more afraid of you.

On a more mundane level, imagine someone cutting you off in traffic. Because it came close to causing an accident, your fear of being in an accident immediately crosses over into rage and possibly road rage. And then imagine catching up to that person and confronting them as in the following actual incident:

Years ago, I was having one of the worst days I had in years. It seemed that every encounter I had, every problem I faced, turned out negative. I was feeling beat up and beaten and driving with much more on my mind than how I was driving. There is a road called Sepulveda Boulevard that goes alongside the San Diego Freeway in Los Angeles as you cross from the Westside area through the Sepulveda pass into the San Fernando Valley. Just as I was entering the San Fernando Valley going south on Sepulveda Boulevard, I cut off a large man and his wife in his pick up truck. He honked angrily at me, and I waved to gesture I was sorry, and then a half mile later, I proceeded to do it again. At that point he pulled his truck to a full and abrupt stop in front of me. Because I was still dazed from the day I was having, I stopped my car. I could see that his wife was gesturing to him not to get out of the truck. I just stared.

In a few moments, he did get out of his truck. All 6.5 feet and 300 pounds of him. He walked over to my car and banged angrily on my driver's side window and angrily started yelling at me in a threatening manner. I was so dazed I actually rolled my window down to hear him. I know you're thinking: "Mark, that was crazy! You're going to get yourself beaten to a pulp (all 5 foot, 9 inches, 160 pounds of me)." Instead, I just waited until he paused to reload on more vitriol.

I then said to him, "Have you ever had such an awful day, that you're just hoping to meet someone who will pull out a gun, shoot you and put you out of your misery? Are you that someone?"

At that point, he completely changed his demeanor, was taken aback and said, "What?"

I replied, "Yeah, I really mean it. Look, I don't usually cut people off and never cut someone off twice. I'm having a day where everything I do and everyone I meet -- including you! -- I just seem to mess up. Are you the person who is going to mercifully put an end to it?"

He then switched to being calming and reassuring, "Hey. C'mon man. It'll be okay. Really! Just relax, it will be okay. Everyone has days like this."

I continued my rant. "That's easy for you to say! You didn't screw up everything like I have done today. I don't think it will be okay. I just want out! Can't you help me with that?"

He continued with even reassuring fervor, "No really. I mean it. It will be okay. Just relax."

Our conversation continued for a few minutes, and I actually calmed down. He got back into his truck, said a few things to his wife, waved to me in the rear view mirror as if to say, "Now remember. Relax. It'll be okay." And then he drove off.

What's the takeaway?

If you can now view anyone that you believe is resisting and fighting you as if they are locked in a state of non-rational (e.g., you're not attacking them, but they still feel the need to protect themselves), non-functional (e.g., two opposing parties both exercising fearful aggression are at war) self-preservation, you will feel less threatened and be less inclined to act in a threatening manner to protect yourself.

When that happens, guards go down, the potential to listen, hear and consider goes up and the possibility for not just compromise but collaboration becomes real.

Why the French title for this? I was thinking that you might become so reflexively locked in your non-rational, non-functional self-preserving paradigm that if I caused you to pause to try to understand what "Resistance n'existe pas" meant, that I might actually be able to slip this insight in under your radar.

P.S. What would be the value of an easily-learned and implementable process that directly and immediately removes negativity and contentiousness and improves collaboration within teams, between departments and between companies that also immediately improves people's relationships outside of work? Scientists Get Robot to Walk Like a man

A baby's first step is often considered the hardest and the most significant. Human babies, which are among those that are altricial at birth, are unable to walk and must "learn" to do so, often by mimicking the movements of other people. Now engineers with the University of Arizona have developed a set of robotic legs that essentially also work by mimicking the movements of humans.

Anorexia Nervosa Signs and Common Conceptions

The thought of eating disorders brings about a specific image in people?s mind. This image is usually a dangerously skinny young woman who is constantly struggling with weight management and body image issues. Most people associate eating disorders with women because they are the main demographic that is affected by major eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. These two eating disorders affect millions of people on a daily basis, especially adolescent women. Both of these conditions usually come from insecurities and body image issues that create a false self-perception in the sufferers mind.

Anorexia nervosa signs include a number of things that can either be obvious or too subtle to notice. Some of the more noticeable signs are when a person is overly obsessed with food portions and limiting the amount they consume.

Constantly counting calories and worrying about gaining weight is also a sign that is easily noticed by people who spend a lot of time with anorexics. Some of the anorexia nervosa signs that are not as noticeable are the onset of depression, anxiety, and feelings of guilt that most anorexics hide from most people.

It?s important to look out for anorexia nervosa signs if you suspect a loved one is suffering from anorexia. These signs can vary depending on the severity of the condition and the stability of the sufferer. No matter how severe the condition is, it is never too early to start seeking treatment. All eating disorders, especially anorexia nervosa, can be fatal to people who do not get treatment.

Eating disorder treatment can be customized to help treat all kinds of eating disorders. Anorexia treatment involves therapy, food habit changes, and other components to raise the confidence levels of people suffering from an eating disorder.Treatment can be the difference between living a happy, health life and letting an eating disorder take over your life.

Branstad seeks help in winning CNBC?s ?Top States Twitter Battle?

Gov. Terry Branstad wants the Twitterverse to know Iowa is a great place to do business.

In his weekly press conference this morning, Branstad rolled out his office?s effort to raise Iowa?s economic profile through a contest and rankings process sponsored by CNBC, the cable business-news network.

CNBC this week will release rankings measuring each U.S. state?s economic competitiveness based on several dozen metrics and input from industry groups. As part of the ?Top States? rankings process, states were invited to submit a video talking up their economic strengths and to play up those strengths on Twitter, the social media website.

Branstad displayed a 90-second video his office produced for the contest this morning, and implored Iowans to flood Twitter with messages ? all marked with the hashtag #TopStatesIA ? about why Iowa is a great place to live and do business.

The Twitter-bombing won?t affect the ?Top States? ranking, but is intended win Iowa some national recognition. Each tweet containing the hashtag is also treated as a vote of support for the state, and the state with the most tweets will be declared the contest winner.

Iowa ranked ninth in last year?s Top States list, but came in first for the cost of doing business.

To track the Twitter messages featuring the hashtag, click here.

And here?s Branstad?s video:

WikiLeaks has data from 2.4 million Syrian emails

Placards and messages placed by supporters of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, are seen outside the Ecuador Embassy, London, Friday, June 29, 2012. (AP Photo/Lefteris Pitarakis)

(AP) ? The secret-spilling group WikiLeaks said Thursday it was in the process of publishing material from 2.4 million Syrian emails ? many of which it said came from official government accounts.

WikiLeaks' Sarah Harrison told journalists at London's Frontline Club that the emails reveal interactions between the Syrian government and Western companies, although she declined to go into much further detail.

Harrison quoted WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange as saying that "the material is embarrassing to Syria, but it is also embarrassing to Syria's external opponents."

WikiLeaks posted only a handful of the documents to its website Thursday, but the disclosure ? whose source WikiLeaks has not made clear ? wouldn't be the first major leak of Syrian emails.

In February, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz published excerpts of what it said were emails hacked from Syrian servers by Anonymous, the shadowy Internet activist group. In March, Britain's Guardian newspaper published emails it sourced to Syrian opposition activists.

The messages appeared to catch the glamorous wife of Syrian President Bashar Assad shopping for pricey shoes while her country slipped toward civil war.

Harrison said the WikiLeaks emails dated from August 2006 to March 2012 and originated from hundreds of different domains, including Syria's ministry of presidential affairs.

Harrison said her group was "statistically confident" that the body of material was genuine.

U.S. State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said he didn't believe the disclosures would change anything.

"There is ample evidence about the exact violence that they are perpetrating against their own people," he told reporters. "So my initial reaction is that I am not sure that any additional internal correspondence will change our perspective."

Assange, who is currently seeking asylum at the Ecuadorean Embassy in London, was not at the brief presentation. He is wanted by British police for possible extradition to Sweden to face questions about alleged sexual misconduct there.

He has denied wrongdoing but faces arrest if he leaves the embassy.

Harrison acknowledged that WikiLeaks is facing "a difficult time at the moment" but said "we are continuing to work through that."

Egypt: President orders dissolved parliament back

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's president on Sunday ordered the Islamist-dominated parliament to reconvene in defiance of a military decree dissolving the legislature last month on the basis of a ruling by the country's top court, the state news agency reported.

The surprise move by President Mohammed Morsi, himself an Islamist, will almost certainly lead to a clash with the powerful generals who formally handed power to him on June 30 after spending 16 months at the nation's helm following the ouster of Hosni Mubarak in a popular uprising.

The move also reflects confusion in the roles and powers of Egypt's governing institutions, with the constitution in force under Mubarak suspended after the uprising and no new one adopted.

Open confrontation between the two sides is certain to plunge the country into a new bout of political instability, adding to the many woes Egypt has experienced since Mubarak's ouster by a popular uprising in 2011. Already, the country has been beset by a surge of crime, a faltering economy, a seemingly endless series of strikes, sit-ins and demonstrations.

In the first sign of an imminent crisis, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces, the formal name of the body grouping the nation's top generals, held an "emergency meeting" shortly after Morsi's decree was announced.

The official Middle East News Agency said the generals met to "review and discuss the consequences" of Morsi's decision. The council has yet to publicly comment on the president's decision.

The decree by Morsi, a longtime member of the Muslim Brotherhood group, also called for new parliamentary elections to be held within 60 days of the adoption of a new constitution for the country, which is not expected before late this year.

Last month, the then-ruling military generals dissolved the legislature when the Supreme Constitutional Court, the country's highest tribunal, ruled that a third of its members had been elected illegally. The text of Morsi's decree made no mention of the Supreme Constitutional Court, saying it was only revoking the military's own decree to disband the legislature.

The military announced a "constitutional declaration" on June 16 that gave it legislative powers in the absence of parliament and stripped Morsi of much of his presidential authority. It also gave the generals control over the process of drafting a new constitution and immunity from any civilian oversight. It also gave itself control of the national budget.

Morsi came to power after narrowly defeating Mubarak's last prime minister, Ahmed Shafiq, in a June 16-17 runoff. He was declared the winner on June 24. He symbolically took the oath of office five days later at Tahrir Square, birthplace of the revolt that toppled Mubarak's regime on Feb. 11, 2001.

He took the formal oath the next day before the Supreme Constitutional Court and again during a later speech at Cairo University before hundreds of his supporters, including many of the dissolved legislature's lawmakers.

A conservative Islamist, Morsi may have made his move inspired in large part by a desire to assert his authority in the face of the military, which has been the country's de facto ruler since army officers seized power in a 1952 coup that toppled the monarchy. But Morsi's defiance of a ruling by the country's highest court could backfire, leading to charges that he has no respect for the judiciary.

Morsi's decree came only hours after he met with a senior U.S. official who gave him a message from President Barack Obama that assured him of America's commitment to a "new partnership" with Egypt.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns told reporters after the meeting that Egyptians could rely on U.S. support as they try to realize their aspirations.

"Egyptians know far better than we do that their aspirations are not yet fully realized, but they can count on America's partnership on the complicated road ahead," Burns said.

Washington, he said, was looking to see a democratically elected parliament in Egypt, a constitution that protects "universal rights" and an inclusive government that "embraces all of Egypt's faiths and respects the rights of women and secular members of society."

Burns is the highest ranking U.S. official to meet Morsi since he succeeded Hosni Mubarak, a close U.S. ally whose regime was toppled in a popular uprising last year.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's is also due to travel to Egypt later this month.
