The Joy of Konglish (2): G?L @ HanCinema :: The Korean Movie ...

By Andrew Salmon

In the second of a four-part series, we continue looking at some popular Korean and/or English terms whose meanings differ from what an expatriate or foreigner visitor might reasonably expect. Inverted commas ? "..." ? indicate separate entries. The third installment will be published in two weeks.

Galbi: Food of the gods.

Gangster: Never encountered on Korea's (very safe) streets, but swarming over "K-soaps" "K-dramas" and the "real estate" business. Also inhabits the "chairman's" office of at least one "chaebol".

Generation Gap: Think of the Grand Canyon, and you will have an inkling.

Green Growth: Stated pro-environmental policy that ? Oh! Irony! ? frequently involves tons of concrete.

Grey: Vies with black and white as the top color choice for Korean automobiles. (Carmakers! Why? Is colored paint more expensive?)

Golf: Internationally; dull, low-impact "sport" played by ill-dressed, out-of-shape persons. In Korea; networking for the rich and powerful.

Government Office: Often-monumental structure, easily located as there will be a noisy "demonstration" underway nearby.

Government Official: Polite, well-presented individual who works at a "government office" and whose aim in life is risk avoidance.

Hagwon: Institution to which Korean mothers pay huge sums; in return, their children are mentally tortured until the wee hours.

Hallyu: Korean popular cultural export ? unwholesomely wholesome pop acts, syrup-coated soap operas and cutting-edge movies ? which has been successfully marketed internationally by the private sector. Every government arm and NGO is now desperately leaping aboard the promotional bandwagon.

Hangeul: Korea's brilliantly clever and simple phonetic alphabet. Easily learned, and so useful to read menus and impress chums in foreign countries. ("Yes, I read and write Korean...") Alas, the spoken language is fiendishly difficult.

Hanok: Traditional Korean cottage, virtually eradicated nationwide. Seen by eccentric foreigners as charming; seen by Koreans as pesky, old-fashioned eyesores which exist to provide training for bulldozer drivers.

Heritage: Temple or royal palace, ergo worthy of "Restoration". (Note: "heritage" does not apply to "hanok" or other commoners' sites.)

Hooker Hill: Itaewon hill noted for ? say no more. A surprising number of seemingly respectable expatriates may be spotted here in the early hours? this columnist's visit was solely for research purposes, naturally. (I want a word with you in my office ? Ed.)

Homo Hill: Itaewon gay district, jocularly dubbed "Brokeback Hill". Inebriated revelers may suffer sexual disorientation if they mistake it for parallel "Hooker Hill" or nearby "Tranny Alley".

Human Rights: What "liberals" demand for South Koreans, but deny to North Koreans.

IMF: Shadowy organization of international financial villains that tried to devastate Korea's economy and society in the late 1990s. Their attempt was narrowly foiled.

Incandescent with rage: Troubling condition afflicting some readers of this column.

Japan: Nation which is good at animation, produces OK grub, and whose yen-wielding shoppers are welcomed, but let's face it: The great Satan.

Jeju Island: Formerly: Subtropical island whose hotels' bedsprings were heavily strained due to popularity among identically dressed honeymoon couples. Currently, one of the world's "Seven Wonders of Nature". (That's official!)

Kimchi: The world's most delicious, healthiest condiment, and never forget it! If (horror) you don't like it, do not admit it, on pain of ostracism. An acquired taste, so incoming expatriates should begin immunizing themselves with small doses, pre-arrival.

Kim Jong-un: Porcine but youthful dictator; leader of the "Norks". Probably most famous living Korean, following the exit of his even more iconic father, Jong-il.

Kim, Park or Lee: Tom, Dick or Harry.

Korea: Northeast Asian nation sandwiched between "China" and "Japan" that increasingly punches above its weight. If you are reading this in hard copy, you are probably standing/sitting in it.

Korea Times: The paper to read in Korea, and a far livelier one than its competitors. It's never too late to subscribe. (Good work getting this one in! ? Ed.)

K-Pop: Pretty-boy or pretty-girl band, birthed, incubated and rigorously trained in formation dancing and singing in unison by Seoul-based management companies. Usually contains six-plus members, cunningly formulated so that management can ditch any member who gets rock star syndrome without damaging the overall image.

K-soap K-drama: Inescapable feature of Korean TV. A drama in which beautiful people ? bespoke tailored, possessed of the finest cars, homes and gadgets ? find themselves embroiled in melodramatic, unlikely and apparently sex-free romantic entanglements.

KTX: Hyper-fast, efficient and affordable Korean train. All British Rail staff should be forced to experience this.

Lame duck: One-legged fowl. Also, what every Korean "President" inevitably becomes as their (single) term in office nears an end.

Liberal: Class of political Korean professing leftist sentiments while espousing the jingoism common among far-right European extremists.

Lone Star: In English, a U.S. investment fund seeking high-risk, high-return profits. In Konglish, a U.S. investment fund seeking "excessive profits" staffed by frenzied serial killers whose aim is to asset strip and lay waste to Korea.

Long-term management: Tried-and-tested "chaebol" refutation, rolled out when "minority shareholders" request "dividends".

Andrew Salmon is a Seoul-based reporter and author. His latest work, "Scorched Earth, Black Snow", was published in London in June. Reach him at [email?protected] This is the second installment of a four-part series.

Bees shed light on human sweet perception and metabolic disorders

ScienceDaily (June 29, 2012) ? Scientists at Arizona State University have discovered that honey bees may teach us about basic connections between taste perception and metabolic disorders in humans.

By experimenting with honey bee genetics, researchers have identified connections between sugar sensitivity, diabetic physiology and carbohydrate metabolism. Bees and humans may partially share these connections.

In a study published in the open-access journal PLoS Genetics (Public Library of Science), Gro Amdam, an associate professor, and Ying Wang, a research scientist, in the School of Life Sciences in ASU's College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, explain how for the first time, they've successfully inactivated two genes in the bees' "master regulator" module that controls food-related behaviors. By doing so, researchers discovered a possible molecular link between sweet taste perception and the state of internal energy.

"A bee's sensitivity to sugar reveals her attitude towards food, how old the bee is when she starts searching for nectar and pollen, and which kind of food she prefers to collect," said Wang, the lead author of the paper. "By suppressing these two 'master' genes, we discovered that bees can become more sensitive to sweet taste. But interestingly, those bees also had very high blood sugar levels, and low levels of insulin, much like people who have Type 1 diabetes."

In Amdam's honey bee lab at ASU, scientists suppressed two genes including vitellogenin, which is similar to a human gene called apolipoprotein B, and ultraspiracle, which partners with an insect hormone that has some functions in common with the human thyroid hormone. The team is the first in the world to accomplish this double gene-suppressing technique. Researchers used this method to understand how the master regulator works.

"Now, if one can use the bees to understand how taste perception and metabolic syndromes are connected, it's a very useful tool," said Amdam, who also has a honey bee laboratory at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. "Most of what we know about deficits in human perceptions is from people who are very sick or have had a brain trauma. We know shockingly little about people in this area."

The researchers are now considering how, exactly, the bees' sweet taste was enhanced by the experiment. The most metabolically active tissue of the bee, called the fat body, may hold the key. The fat body is similar to the liver and abdominal fat in humans, in that it helps store nutrients and create energy.

Amdam explains that taste perception evolved as a survival mechanism, for bees as well as for people. For example, bitter foods may be poisonous or sweet taste may signal foods rich in calories for energy. For all animals, taste perception must communicate properly with one's internal energetic state to control food intake and maintain normal life functions. Without this, poorly functioning taste perception can contribute to unhealthy eating behaviors and metabolic diseases, such as diabetes and obesity.

"From this study, we realized we can take advantage of honey bees in understanding how food-related behaviors interact with internal metabolism, as well as how to manipulate these food-related behaviors in order to control metabolic disorders," added Amdam.

In addition to Amdam and Wang, the team included former ASU research partners Colin Brent, a research entomologist with the USDA, and Erin Fennern, now with Oregon Health Science University.

Obama tours devastation of Colorado wildfire

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (Reuters) - President Barack Obama on Friday described as a "major disaster" a Colorado wildfire that has destroyed 347 homes and forced the evacuation of 35,000 people near the state's second-largest city, as he toured the devastation left by the blaze.

Before landing, Air Force One flew over part of the Rocky Mountains where smoke could be seen rising from the areas ravaged by what officials say is the most destructive blaze in state history. At least one death has been blamed on the fire.

The blaze had roared unchecked on Tuesday night through communities in the northwestern corner of the city and threatened the U.S. Air Force Academy campus.

Lighter winds were helping firefighters make progress, but the fire remained just 15 percent contained on Friday afternoon.

Aerial photos of devastation unleashed by the so-called Waldo Canyon Fire showed large swaths of neighborhoods reduced to gray ash - one house after another obliterated while adjacent dwellings survived mostly unscathed.

"This has been a devastating early fire season for Colorado. This community, obviously, is heartbroken by the loss of homes," Obama said to reporters as he walked along a street of burned-out homes. "We're lucky, because of the quick action that's been taken, that we haven't seen a lot of loss of life."

Obama's motorcade drove through a neighborhood dotted with houses that survived the fires next to others that had burned to the ground, rolling past the melted remains of a children's play area and shells of cars destroyed in the inferno.

Authorities confirmed the full extent of destruction on Friday, with 347 houses gutted by fire and more than 20,000 homes still threatened by the blaze.

Colorado Springs Police Chief Peter Carey said a body was found in the debris of a burned-out home, marking the first known death from the blaze. The person became the fifth killed this year in a Colorado wildfire season described by the governor as the worst ever in the state.

Two people were reported missing at the residence where a body was found on Thursday, Carey said, noting that less than 10 people remained missing.

The tally of homes consumed by the Waldo Canyon blaze ranks as the most on record, surpassing the 257 homes destroyed by a much larger blaze north of Denver near Fort Collins.

RASH OF WILDFIRES ACROSS COUNTRY

Waldo Canyon was among more than 40 large, uncontained wildfires being fought across the United States, the bulk of them in 10 western states - Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, South Dakota, Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada and even Hawaii, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

In western Colorado, the size of the Pine Ridge Fire northeast of Grand Junction grew overnight to 10,000 acres from 1,500 the day before.

Searing temperatures and strong, erratic winds stoked the Waldo Canyon blaze earlier this week, burning at least 18,500 acres of timber and brush, much of it in the Pike National Forest at the base of the famed Pikes Peak mountaintop.

Federal agencies have mobilized massive C-130 military airtankers to help fight the fire, joining more than 1,200 firefighters, heavy air tankers and helicopters dropping flame-retardant chemicals. Nearby Army base Fort Carson sent 120 soldiers to help battle the blaze.

Obama announced that federal money would be made available to local agencies and individuals affected by the fire.

While a red-flag warning for heightened fire hazards that had been in place since the fire erupted was lifted, anguish and frustration ran high among many of the estimated 35,000 residents who had to be evacuated from homes.

"You don't have the authority to keep me out of my house," David Dougherty, 45, a retired member of the Armed Forces, shouted out during a news conference. "I understand they're trying to save lives, but some of us don't need to be saved."

Dougherty said he believed his dwelling was still intact and wanted to be let back in to the evacuation zone to secure his home and his belongings. Police reported at least two arrests for burglary in an evacuated neighborhood.

SOME EVACUEES RETURN, OTHERS LEFT HOMELESS

While authorities began allowing some evacuees to return Thursday night, hundreds of residents from neighborhoods caught in the heart of a major firestorm on Tuesday remained displaced.

The FBI is investigating if any of the wildfires was started by criminal activity, but the cause remains unknown.

The fire menacing Colorado Springs follows a recent string of suspected arson fires in a neighboring county, but officials said they had no indication that the blaze was deliberately set.

Although federal authorities say the fire season got off to an early start in parts of the Northern Rockies, the number of fires and acreage burned nationwide is still below the 10-year average for this time of year, according to fire agency records.

Friday Favorites - Shrinking Kitchen - Eat. Drink. Shrink.

Photobucket

Here in the Shrinking Kitchen, we ladies have all kinds of favorites- favorite cookbook, cooking gadgets, cooking tips, organizational tips, magazines, food blogs, appliances, recipes, you get the idea?

We figured it would be fun to share with you our favorites and in turn, you could share with US one of YOUR favorites. We are always open to learning and trying new things.

Summertime in the northern plains means BERRIES! The kids and I joined a CSA this year, with all the berry-picking we can handle. So what do we do with those blueberries once our tummies are full?

Freeze them! Here?s how:

First of all, fresh blueberries can be stored in the refrigerator for approximately 10 days before they spoil. So, any that won?t be consumed in that time period should be frozen and not wasted!

Don?t wash your blueberries before freezing. Wash them after removing from the freezer. Remove dirt clumps and/or stems.

Spread berries onto a cookie sheet and place in freezer. Leave overnight. This will keep them from freezing together in big clumps, allowing you to use just the amount you need.

Transfer to a Ziploc baggie or a vacuum-seal-able bag.

Use a Sharpie to label the bag with contents and date.

Now enjoy blueberries year-round!

What are some of your favorites?

Google puts Chrome on iPhone and iPad (update 2: it's out!)

Google puts Chrome on iPhone and iPad

Google just did what many thought wasn't possible -- it just put mobile Chrome on iOS. Both iPad and iPhone users will get the app, either with incognito browsing, syncing and that unique tabbed browsing interface intact. The company hasn't said what's changed versus the Android build, but it's likely the main differences are matters of integration -- Apple's app rules won't let Google bring in its own WebKit rendering engine tweaks or change the default browser. Whether or not that switch is a dealbreaker, Chrome should be available later today in the App Store for those who want a break from the Safari norm.

Check out our full coverage of Google I/O 2012's developer conference at our event hub!

Update: No download just yet, but Google is teasing us with a video that you can find after the break. The iOS port shows up at the 43-second mark.

Update 2: It's available! Hit the source link to get your copy.
